Event Description

The Historic Preservation Committee of the MVHS Board of Directors is pleased to announce the winners of the 2017 Historic Preservation Awards.  These awards honor those in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties who take an active role in preserving historic buildings, sites, and districts.  Winners of the Community Revitalization Awards are Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica – Youngstown; Lewis House – Poland Preservation Society; St. Patrick Church – Youngstown; and the Commercial Revitalization Award winner is Peter Allen Inn – Kinsman.

The winners will be honored at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s 142nd Annual Meeting to be held on Tuesday, June 20th from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center, 325 West Federal Street in downtown Youngstown.  The public is invited to attend the dinner, cost is $28 for MVHS members and $32 for guests.

Power of the Arts presents a grantseeker symposium, bringing together the Ohio Arts Council, Ohio Humanities Council, Ohio Citizens for the Arts, Mahoning Valley foundations including the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley and the Thomases Family Foundation, arts and culture nonprofits, and individual artists, to discuss arts and culture funding in the Valley and in Ohio. St. John’s Episcopal Church will host the event in the Great Hall. George Nelson of The Business Journal will moderate the panel and Q&A. Dinner will be catered by Café India, and after the discussion, a trio of Dana School of Music students will play a brief jazz set on Dana’s Steinway, housed at St. John’s: Jason Volovar on piano, Matt Jackson on bass guitar and Hobie Butcher on drums. Opera Western Reserve will present a Spring Opera Cabaret in the Tyler Grand Ballroom. Enjoy entertainment by the stars of OWR as singers from past productions perform arias as well as more mainstream numbers. Hors d’oeuvres and dessert are included in the cost of admission, and a cash bar will be on hand. Proceeds will benefit OWR. OWR presents free performances to local school districts to assist in continuing music education in schools as well as the yearly opera performance each November at Stambaugh Auditorium.Read more…
